Hyeongseok (Darby) Kim

Biography

Hyeongseok Kim, a graduate research assistant with the UNC Institute for the Environment and a Ph.D. student at the UNC Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. Over the past 6 years, he participated in several projects for government (Ministry of Environment and Korea Environment Corporation) and agency (Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment). Most of his research during this period has focused on modeling and analyses that support air quality modeling activities and health assessment for policy decisions. From 2014 through 2016, he did extracurricular activities related to the environment for the Green Environmental Project at Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to propose a policy for better environmental quality using diplomacy. He joined United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and participated in the China-Japan-Korea round table in Shanghai, China, communicating with young researchers and presenting for SDGs. He was an ambassador of many agencies with the Seoul Korea Federation for Environmental Movement (SKFEM), School Ambassador at HanKyong National University and Korea Railroad (KRAIL). He was in charge of many different activities such as vice president of the Association of Student Ambassador-Korea (ASA-K), vice president of the dormitory self-government committee of the HanKyong National University and a leader of working staff in the World Clean Air Congress (WCAC). He has just joined a project for the Alternative Jet Fuels and the Environment (ASCENT) COE. His recent research interests include ultrafine particles (UFPs) near airport area by using CMAQ and big data population based on mobile phones.
