Biography

John Szoka is a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing the 45th District of Cumberland County. First elected in 2012, Representative Szoka was re-elected to serve his fifth term in the House in 2020. He is a member of the NC House leadership team, elected House Republican Conference Leader. He is Senior Chairman of the Finance Committee; Chairman of the Energy and Public Utilities Committee, Chairman of the Joint Legislative Commission on Energy Policy, and Chairman of the Select Committee on Community Relations, Law Enforcement, and Justice.

Rep. Szoka is a graduate of West Point, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. He served over 20 years as an Infantry Officer, retiring from active duty in 1996 as a Lieutenant Colonel.  Ranger and Airborne qualified, Mr. Szoka served in a variety of command and staff positions during his career; and in 1985 he earned a Masters Degree in Operations Research from the University of Texas at Austin.

Since his retirement from active duty, he has owned several successful small businesses, including his current company, Falcon37, which manufactures charging handles for AR-15 rifles.

Representative Szoka has been the primary sponsor of many significant bills.  Two of this session’s most significant laws,  HB83, Eliminate Income Tax for Military Retirees and HB 951Energy Solutions for North Carolina, both passed by wide margins.

Representative Szoka and his wife, Laurie, also a retired Army officer and a Nurse Practitioner, reside in Fayetteville, North Carolina and have two grown children, Hunter and Morgan.
