Biography

A retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, Representative John Szoka is once again serving his country — this time as a member of the North Carolina General Assembly.
Representing Cumberland County, John Szoka has lived in Fayetteville for twenty years and he’s owned and operated a mortgage company there for the last fifteen years. In 2012, he decisively defeated his opponent and is now serving his third term representing the then newly-formed District 45 in the General Assembly, which surrounds Fayetteville. Based on his strong record in the House during his freshman term, Representative Szoka ran unopposed in both 2014 and 2016.

Representative Szoka was born in Ohio and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a degree in Engineering. He went on to earn a graduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in Operations Research, a field of mathematics used for allocating resources.

This session, Representative Szoka serves on seven committees: Elections and Elections Law; Energy and Public Utilities (Chair); Finance (Chair); Health; Homeland Security, Military, and Veterans Affairs; Judiciary III; and Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House (Vice Chair).

Last session, Speaker Moore appointed Representative Szoka to both chair the Finance Committee and to serve as Vice-Chairman of the Commerce and Job Development Committee. He will also serve on the Banking Committee, the Education Committee on Community Colleges, the Committee on Health, the Committee on Homeland Security, Military, and Veterans Affairs, the Local Government Committee, and the powerful Rules Committee.

Representative Szoka served on seven committees in his first term: Agriculture; Appropriations; Banking; Commerce and Job Development; Health and Human Services; Homeland Security, Military, and Veterans Affairs (Vice-Chairman); and the Revenue Laws Study Committee.

Representative Szoka and his wife Laurie have been married for over 30 years. They have two grown children.
