IDEA Undergraduate Geoscience Students Present at Celebration of Undergraduate Research

May 2, 2017

On April 27, six undergraduate geoscientists presented posters at the 18th annual UNC Celebration of Undergraduate Research. The students – Karylle Abella (Mentor: Carol Arnosti and JP Balmonte, Marine Science), Ricardo Garcia (Mentor: Joel Hudley, Geology), Will Larsen (Mentor: Xiaoming Liu, Geology), Daniela Lopez (Mentor: Gabriela Valdivia, Geography), Samir Patel (Mentor: Karl Castillo, Marine Science), and Kathia Toledo (Mentor: Gabriela Valdivia, Geography) – were selected to complete research internships during the 2016-2017 academic year through the Increasing Diversity and Enhancing Academia (IDEA) program. Each of these students prepared a poster and talking points and practiced communicating the outcomes of their project to academic and non-academic audiences at the symposium. IDEA is funded by the National Science Foundation program called Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Pathways into Geoscience. The UNC Institute for the Environment will be welcoming a new cohort of ten undergraduate students into the next version of IDEA at the end of May 2017.
