Easterling (’76, ’81, ’85) to Lead Geosciences at National Science Foundation

Carolina graduate and Institute for the Environment Board of Visitors member William E. Easterling has been selected to lead the Directorate for Geosciences at the National Science Foundation. His new post supports fundamental research spanning the atmospheric, earth, ocean and polar sciences. Easterling is a triple Tarheel, earning three degrees from Carolina all in geography. Since 2007, he has served as dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State University and has been a professor of geography and earth system science since 1999. Easterling begins his 4-year term with NSF in June.
