Undergraduate Experiential Education
The Center for Public Engagement with Science coordinates local environmentally focused internships through EcoStudio, a relatively new collaboration between the UNC Institute for the Environment and the UNC Environment, Ecology and Energy Program (E3P). EcoStudio offers applied learning experiences to UNC undergraduate students year-round. Since EcoStudio began in 2018, CPES has paired more than 75 UNC undergraduate students with local internships.
Since 2012, the UNC Institute for the Environment has partnered with UNC geoscience faculty and the Department of Environmental, Earth and Geospatial Sciences at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) to provide 10-week (summer), mentored geoscience research experiences and academic year activities for undergraduate students. Participation is especially encouraged from female students and those who identify as underrepresented minorities in geoscience fields.
The Center for Public Engagement with Science coordinates local sustainability focused internships for UNC undergraduate students through the Sustainable Triangle Field Site (STFS). Each spring, the STFS offers a semester-long, experience that enables students to pair academic studies with professional experience gained in local internship settings. Since 2012, CPES has paired more than 125 UNC undergraduates with internships through the STFS program.
