Biography

Penn Markham is an engineer in the Distribution Planning and DG Integration group at Dominion Energy in Richmond, Virginia.

A native of Charleston, West Virginia, Dr. Markham earned his B.S.E.E. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2006, and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville in 2012.

From 2013 to 2017, he worked in the Grid Operations and Planning research program at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Knoxville, Tennessee. While at EPRI, he developed a number of software applications related to load modeling, risk-based planning, system protection, and frequency response calculation.

Since joining Dominion Energy, he has been involved with efforts to automate hosting capacity analysis and various other planning-related tasks. Most recently, he has been leading the development of state-mandated distribution-connected energy storage pilot projects. He is currently an industry advisor to EPRI’s Energy Storage research program.

Dr. Markham’s research interests include wide-area measurement systems, energy storage, power systems simulation, and data analytics.

He is a member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society.
