Dr. Hinshaw is a Professor of Applied Ecology and Extension Aquaculture Specialist (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences), and Associate Faculty of the Comparative Biomedical Sciences Program (College of Veterinary Medicine), North Carolina State University. He directs a research and extension program in aquaculture of coldwater and coolwater fish species at NCSU’s Research and Extension Center facilities near Asheville, North Carolina. Jeff received his BS degree (’74) from the Department of Biology at UNC, then his MS (’81) and PhD (’86) from NC State University. During his professional career, he has worked as a biologist for the NC Office of Marine Affairs, a consultant to the Fisheries Division of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, a biologist at the Environmental Protection Agency Laboratory in Research Triangle Park, NC, and since completion of his graduate studies in 1986, as a faculty member of North Carolina State University.
As a focal point of his research and extension efforts, Jeff has worked very closely with the US trout farming industry, and was elected to the Board of Directors of the US Trout Farmers Association in 1999 where he served as President (2002-2003) and as Chairman of the Board (2003-2006). Jeff was elected to the board of the US Aquaculture Society as a Director (2001-2002), Vice-President (2003), and President (2004-2005), and has served on or chaired several committees for USAS and also for the World Aquaculture Society. Jeff served on the Board of Directors of the World Aquaculture Society 2005 as the USAS representative, then was elected as President of the World Aquaculture Society in 2009-2010. In 2019 he was selected as a Fellow of the World Aquaculture Society.

2015 Research article received recognition as “Editor’s Choice” in the February 2015 issue of Letters in Applied Microbiology.
2010 Invited delegate to the meeting of the Subcommittee on Aquaculture, Committee on Fisheries (COFI), Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN. Phuket, Thailand. September 27 – October 1, 2010.
2010-2013 Selected by the NC Commissioner of Agriculture to represent NC Agriculture on the Ecological Flows Science Advisory Board, an advisory board established by the NC Legislature to work with NCDENR on methods of determining residual flows in North Carolina waterways.
2009 CALS Faculty Resource Development Award.
2006 US Trout Farmers ‘Ugliest Trout Farmer Award’ (first ever presented to a non-industry member – It is an honorable recognition, really….).
2004 Certificate of Recognition from the Deputy Administrator of CSREES/USDA for Outstanding Contributions in Assisting USDA and EPA in the Effluent Limitation Guidelines Development Process.
