Biography

Abubakr Abbas is a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill majoring in Environmental Science with a minor in Data Science. Growing up in Sudan, Abubakr witnessed the challenges of energy scarcity and climate change, inspiring his passion for advancing renewable energy access in underserved communities. As a Cleantech Summit Intern at the UNC Institute for the Environment, he is coordinating with embassies and international organizations to secure expert speakers and develop a panel on emerging markets in Africa. He also serves as a research assistant at the UNC Environmental Finance Center, where he analyzes stakeholder interviews and data to address water management challenges in low- and middle-income countries. During his internship at Strata Clean Energy, Abubakr developed Power BI dashboards to enhance project performance and streamline bidding processes. This semester, he is leading a capstone project focused on optimizing utility interconnection for EV charging infrastructure in commercial real estate. Abubakr is passionate about finding innovative ways to foster clean energy transitions and promote sustainable development in communities that need it most.
