Andrew Zachman

Research Assistant, Carolina Drone Lab

Biography

Andrew Zachman is a research associate with the Carolina Drone Lab. He is currently working on using terrestrial LiDAR to quantify forest structure. Additionally, Zachman is exploring the use of thermal imagery to detect bobwhite quail and black rails.

Zachman is from Pilot Mountain, North Carolina. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill where he studied environmental science and developed his love for the plants and natural communities of North Carolina. After graduating in 2019, Zachman began working for North Carolina State Parks. He worked statewide in this role, implementing forest restoration projects and working extensively in prescribed fire management. Zachman returned to UNC-Chapel Hill in 2021 to study forest responses to fire frequency and the resulting impacts on seed dispersal distance.

Outside of work Zachman enjoys cooking and sharing meals with his friends, inspecting the native plant garden he manages with his wife, and running and birding with his dog Odie.
