Renée Bichler

Research Associate, Center for Environmental Modeling for Policy Development

Biography

Renée Bichler joined the UNC Institute for the Environment as a research associate in October 2024 where she works as a remote sensing specialist in the Center for Environmental Modeling for Policy Development (CEMPD). Bichler will support studies regarding the Zero Emissions Appliances Standards (ZEAS) under the call on the G7 Climate Mitigation Policy Solutions.

Bichler is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in climate and environmental sciences from the University of Augsburg in Germany. Her Ph.D. is carried out in cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), where she studies the impact of economic development on air pollution based on satellite observations. Bichler is using time series and spectral analysis methods to analyze the long-term development of air pollution variability and the impact of economic development.

Prior to her position at the DLR, Bichler lectured in the field of geographic information sciences (GIS) at the University of Vienna in Austria, completed internships at the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European (EU) Commission in Italy where she analyzed TROPOMI observations from Sentinel-5P as well as studied vehicle emissions regarding the EU emission standards for diesel engines. On top of that she gained experience as an Earth Observations/GIS expert in industry.

Bichler also enjoys working with electronics and low-cost sensors, as well as developing dashboards with analytics for data streams.
