A Home on Campus
Carolina has world-class interdisciplinary strengths in environmental research, education and service distributed throughout campus. The UNC Institute for the Environment is working to enhance Carolina’s ability to meet environmental challenges by increasing our campus-wide integration to improve our programs and compete for research resources. Collaboration is critical in establishing Carolina as a global leader in the environment. Working together will help us attract the best and brightest faculty, students and staff and facilitate their future successes. The UNC Institute for the Environment is poised to support achieving this goal.
Currently, we are housed in an office building off-campus, which presents challenges in developing this community. Building and nurturing dynamic partnerships throughout campus and beyond, enhances Carolina’s productivity and quality in environmental research, education and service. Having a central space on UNC-Chapel Hill’s main campus will allow us to connect ideas, people and programming to develop solutions in ways we could not do in our current location.
In the For All Kind: the Campaign for Carolina, one of our core priorities includes finding our home on campus. We are exploring a number of alternatives with our partners throughout campus, and are analyzing possibilities ranging from renovated space within a building on campus to the potential to participate as a member of a shared environmental group to create new space. Depending on the nature of the opportunity identified the gift to move the project forward will be between $15-$40 million.
