“CALIOPE-urban: coupling R-LINE with CMAQ for urban air quality forecasts over Barcelona”

Air quality in cities is affected by processes at different spatial and temporal scales. To simulate these dynamics, specific models for each scale (e.g. mesoscale or street scale) are usually applied. Recently, combining models working at different scales has been proven to successfully estimate air quality at street level. CALIOPE-Urban, a street scale air quality modelling system over Barcelona, is being developed to reproduce strong concentration gradients that some pollutants (e.g. NO2) present near urban sources (e.g. roadways). CALIOPE-Urban combines R-LINE, a Gaussian plume model, with the CALIOPE forecasting system. CALIOPE integrates the Weather Research and Forecasting meteorological model (WRF), the High-Elective Resolution Modelling Emission System (HERMES), the Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ) and the mineral Dust REgional Atmospheric Model (BSC-DREAM8b).The main challenges to be addressed during the development of CALIOPE-Urban include: scarce data for evaluation of the model, adaptation of R-LINE to Barcelona geometrical patterns and R-LINE integration into the CALIOPE system. This presentation describes the development of the CALIOPE-Urban system as well as its evaluation using ambient street-level pollutant and meteorological measurements.


Biosketch for Jaime Benavides

Jaime Benavides has a Msc. degree in Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems with emphasis on Data Mining and a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering both from University of Granada. Currently, he is doing a PhD at the Technical University of Catalonia and at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center under the supervision of Dr. Oriol Jorba, Dr. Albert Soret and Dr. Marc Guevara. Benavides is dealing with the Development and Evaluation of a street scale air quality modelling system over Barcelona. He is a visiting researcher at the UNC IE’s Center for Environmental Modeling for Policy Development (CEMPD) where he is adapting R-LINE to Barcelona conditions in collaboration with Dr. Michelle Snyder, codeveloper of R-LINE. R-LINE is an open-source modeling program developed at the U.S. EPA and at IE’s CEMPD.
