The Group on Emissions, Modelling, and Climate Change (GEMAC) from the University of Aveiro, Portugal (, has been carrying out, for over two and a half decades, research focused on air quality, namely on atmospheric pollutants emissions, air quality modelling, urban sustainability, human comfort, health an risk, and always with a special attention to the contribution to the decision making process. In this talk, an overview of the GEMAC’s research projects will be presented, with examples of how air quality modelling can be used for several purposes and initiatives – from technical support for air quality management to more fundamental research on the atmospheric processes responsible for air pollution episodes – and from local to global scale.Dr. Monteiro will also present the AIRSHIP project ( that aims to evaluate the impact of maritime transport emissions on the air quality in Portugal and, with greater detail, in the Porto urban area, for present and future (2020-2030 projections) climate scenarios. This impact will be investigated, with particular emphasis on the Porto urban area including a local scale case study of the Port of Leixões. Dr. Monteiro will also discuss their efforts to adapt the C-PORT modeling system developed at UNC-IE, for application in the Port of Leixões, in support of the AIRSHIP project.Dr. Monteiro and her Ph.D. student Ms. Sandra Sorte are visiting scientists, spending two weeks at UNC-IE, working with Dr. Sarav Arunachalam and the C-PORT project team.
