Burch Summer Program (Denmark, Germany + Sweden)
The Burch Program begins with three weeks in Freiburg, Germany, where students will study renewable energy, green design including retrofits, and efficient development. Next, students will travel to Copenhagen, Denmark to learn about urban planning including green space, transportation options, and offshore wind power. The final destination is Lund, Sweden, where students will see outstanding examples of focus on mobility, education, the arts, renewable energy, and information technology. Other cities we will visit include Hamburg, Germany; Malmo, Sweden; and Stockholm, Sweden.
For Summer 2013, this trip will run from June 22 – August 3rd.

Students participating in this program as UNC-CH summer session enrollees will earn six credit hours in two honors classes:
- ENEC 490: Special Topics – Environmental Infrastructure and Planning in Germany, Denmark and Sweden (3 hours)
- ENEC 490: Special Topics – Sustainability in Germany, Sweden and Denmark (3 hours)

Two members of the teaching faculty from the Curriculum in Environment and Ecology will be on-site with the students throughout the six-week program.
- Dr. Greg Gangi has a PhD in ecology and a master’s degree in government and international studies. His interest in sustainability began while he was a student at the University of Bamberg, Germany in the 1980s. He has been teaching students about sustainability at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1998. He also has extensive experience leading field based programs and has taken students to such diverse places as the Virgin Islands National Park, the Galapagos, Ecuador, Siberia and the Sierra Nevada.
- Dr. Elizabeth Shay is a researcher who focuses on transportation and land use. She teaches ENEC 330 (Principles of sustainability), and directs the Sustainable Triangle Field Site at UNC-Chapel Hill. She holds a PhD in city and regional planning.
