On Wednesday, November 12, thirty lead and healthy homes professionals from across the state came together at the UNC Institute for the Environment for the quarterly NC Healthy Homes Outreach Task Force meeting. The representatives from local and state health and housing agencies discussed strategies for keeping safe during home visits, particularly when encountering difficult issues like hoarding, mental illness, extreme pest issues (including bed bugs), and concerns for personal safety. Panelists included law enforcement officers from Chapel Hill and Durham, mental health professionals, and a pest expert. Participants shared successful strategies and challenges, resources for adults and families in crisis, and safety tips. Research associate Megan Hughes in the UNC IE Environmental Resource Program coordinates meetings of the task force, and this meeting was supported by funding from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
