Class instructor: Pres Viator
Location: Phillips Hall, Room 265
Course Meets: Tuesday, Thursday - 12:30 - 1:45 PM

Description

ENST 202, Introduction to Environmental Sciences, is an introductory science course. The course is interdisciplinary, drawing on laws, principles, theories, and analytical methods from physics, chemistry, biology, geography, ecology, meteorology, geology, engineering, anthropology, marine sciences and public health. There are no prerequisite courses, but it is recommended that students review all previous courses in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics at least through algebra.

The course focuses on the methods of environmental assessment with an emphasis on the movement and transformation of matter and energy in environmental systems, the role of society in affecting matter and energy flows, and the role of these processes in explicit environmental problems such as air, water, and soil pollution; climate change; biodiversity loss; etc.

The course is a complement to ENST 201 (Introduction to Environment and Society) which provides understanding of how the structure, infrastructure and superstructure of society affect the interaction between humans and the environment.
