Twenty local high school students from the Climate LEAP and IDEA programs came together on March 19 to learn about civic engagement and sustainability. This Saturday Academy was facilitated in collaboration with Paul Bonnici at the UNC School of Government and featured Renee Price, Orange County Board of County Commissioners, Annetta Streater, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education, and Mike Woodard, North Carolina Senator representing Caswell, Durham, and Person counties. The students prepared questions for the elected officials and engaged in conversation with them during rotating interviews. They also took part in a simulated city council meeting, playing the roles of mayor, council persons, and interest groups promoting various environmental and education projects. Following the event, one student stated, “I learned that even though we are underage, we still have the ability to advocate for the things we believe in”.
